Secondary Teacher Consultant Position Description

Flamboyan Foundation seeks a teacher consultant to collaborate in the designing of Back to School Night and gradebook resources for middle school teachers. The ideal candidate is a DC middle or high school teacher, effectively engages their students’ families, is a strong planner with backwards mapping and curriculum design experience, and has strong written communication skills.

Major Deliverables and Related Activities:

Back to School Night (BTSN) best practice research (approx 15 hours)

Flamboyan Foundation is interested in collecting best practices related to effective Back to School Nights at the middle and high school level. In order to collect these best practices, the teacher consultant will:

  1. Review Flamboyan’s existing research and interview staff to understand the goals for BTSN and emerging best practices.
  2. Review online resources for national examples of BTSN at the secondary level, including PowerPoint presentations, schedules, tools or resources, and video examples.
  3. Interview 5 teachers or school leaders at high-performing middle schools in the District about the goals, structure, and content of their BTSN, as well as their attendance outreach.
  4. Interview at least 5 families about their BTSN experiences and what they found most/least valuable, and what they would like to know from the school at the beginning of the year.

Back to School Night Toolkit (approx 10 hours)

In order to create this toolkit, teacher consultant will:

  1. Collaborate with the Director of Secondary Partnerships to identify critical messages and expectations (particularly related to gradebooks) that should be included in an exemplar BTSN for DCPS Middle School Family Engagement Partners.
  2. Create sample content for middle school BTSNs, including an agenda, PowerPoint presentation, master schedule, parent handouts, invitation letters, sign-in sheets/tracking tools, parent evaluations.

Gradebook usage toolkit (approx. 40 hours)

In order to create this toolkit, teacher consultant will:

  1. Interview 5-10 teachers who use online gradebooks to communicate with families and document their classroom and school-level best practices.
  2. Review Flamboyan’s existing research and repository of best practices related to online gradebook and create guidance for teachers and schools for increasing parent sign-ups and usage.
  3. Create a toolkit for teachers and schools that includes all materials necessary to implement a variety of strategies to increase parent usage of grade books. Materials should include, but are not limited to:
    1. Communications to families and students about the purpose of the gradebook.
    2. Instructions about how to sign-up.
    3. Instructions about how to use the gradebook frequently to monitor their children’s performance.
    4. Resources that support families to have meaningful conversations with their children about their performance.
    5. Guidance to teachers about maximizing the gradebook to engage families.
    6. PowerPoint or live presentations that schools could use at BTSN or parent-teacher conferences to communicate with families about gradebook.


Flamboyan Foundation will:

  1. Create draft work plan and timeline for teacher consultant.
  2. Meet with teacher consultant weekly or biweekly to review and provide feedback on completed work.
  3. Answer questions or provide additional feedback via email or phone.
  4. Convene or organize meetings for teacher consultant with other teachers or Flamboyan staff as necessary.
  5. Approve and brand final deliverables. 

Teacher consultant will:

  1. Revise and approve their final work plan and timeline.
  2. Meet with Flamboyan Foundation staff member(s) weekly or biweekly to share completed work and incorporate feedback.
  3. Submit drafts and deliverables on work plan by specified deadlines.
  4. Respond to email or phone communication from Flamboyan Foundation staff within 48 hours.
  5. Attend meetings with other teachers or Flamboyan Foundation staff as necessary.

Criteria and Compensation


  1. DC middle or high school teacher in good standing.
  2. Positive beliefs about families and track record of engaging families in ways that improve student outcomes (attendance, motivation, behavior, achievement).
  3. Backwards planning and/or curriculum design experience.
  4. Strong written communication skills.

Consultant should be available to start work on Monday, July 6, 2015. Consultant will be paid an hourly rate of $35 for a maximum of 80 hours of work (up to $2,800). Consultant will be compensated upon successful completion of deliverables  and submission of their time sheet. All deliverables must be completed on or before Friday, July 31, 2015.

  1. Describe your experience engaging families. What strategies do you use? Which are the most impactful, and why? Please attach 1-2 artifacts as examples of your family engagement.
  2. Describe your experience designing curriculum for a teacher audience. Using an example from your previous work, describe your planning process from start to finish. Please attach 1 artifact from that curriculum that you believe is an exemplar work product.
  3. What is your availability during the summer? Please list other summer commitments, as well as dates any dates when you will be unable to meet (i.e. vacations, family events, etc.).
