Approach
Flamboyan Foundation’s approach to philanthropy is to lead adaptively and play a catalytic role that leverages the foundation’s expertise and influence beyond solely funding to effect lasting and meaningful change in public education so that all children can achieve at high levels.
The following theories and values guide our work:
Theory of Change
Flamboyan believes that change occurs when responsible, achievement oriented people from all parts of society collaborate using fact-based information and innovative thinking to resolve seemingly intractable challenges at the organization and system levels. Flamboyan further believes that when social problems occur, all members of society who share the problem must actively participate in the creation of the solution.
Flamboyan actively identifies responsible, achievement oriented people and creates opportunities for collaboration using solid data. We encourage creative thinking and focus our attention on the most pressing issues facing the quality of public schools.
Core Values
Responsibility: People taking meaningful action
For change to be lasting, people and organizations need to take responsibility for generating progress. Flamboyan Foundation places a high value on people who take meaningful action to address the most pressing problems facing their community.
Achievement: A results oriented approach
To generate progress, people and organizations need to be results oriented. Flamboyan Foundation seeks to work with groups which can set, measure, and achieve goals. We then invest our resources to help them generate progress.
Critical thinking: Using reliable information to be innovative, reflective, and strategic
To be effective, one must be able to think critically. Flamboyan Foundation seeks people and organizations which gather and use data to develop and implement innovative and strategic plans for addressing social and economic problems and who routinely reflect on progress and challenges.
Collaboration: Working together to achieve results
No one person or one organization can resolve the challenges facing a community. For real change to occur, collaboration is essential. Flamboyan Foundation encourages collaboration within its areas of focus and works across all sectors to achieve its goals. We see our role as that of a connector, and we proactively connect individuals, organizations, and systems.
Our Process
Flamboyan Foundation works in Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. We have decided to focus on four areas of focus: Inspiring Effective Philanthropy in Puerto Rico, Driving Education Reform in Puerto Rico, Family Engagement in Washington, D.C., and Education Advocacy in Washington, D.C.
For each area of focus, we follow the same process:
- Understand the local environment by exploring what needs are not currently being met.
- Perform a Landscape Assessment and select an area of focus.
- Develop a deep understanding of that area of focus.
- Propose outcomes and develop a strategy.
- Select and work with partners who are aligned with our work.
- Evaluate our work and share our results.
