Position Summary

Flamboyan Foundation seeks an experienced Senior Managing Director of Talent and Equity to lead Flamboyan’s burgeoning talent development and management efforts. We are looking for an individual to serve as the organization’s first talent and equity officer. As a member of the senior team, this officer will help shape the future direction of our quickly growing organization by enabling us to recruit, retain, and develop our biggest asset, our talent.   This officer will serve as the organization’s steward of our culture and core values.

This full-time role is suited for an individual with experience and passion in building the talent ethos and systems within an organization. The ideal candidate is an enthusiast of systems design and implementation; an exemplar of our core values of equity, people, catalytic action and impact; passionate about people; skilled at incorporating equity into all elements of human resources and accomplished in achieving outcomes across multiple geographies. This role requires building relationships and knowledge about our work in Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico and supporting Flamboyan staff in both geographies to ensure that we embody our organizational commitment to equity.

Successful candidates must have experience directly managing teams, supporting managers in their management and growth, and skill with purposefully creating a long-term talent strategy to ensure the organization embodies its values, develops its talent, and successfully transitions from an entrepreneurial start-up organization to an innovative, sustaining organization. This position reports to the chief operating officer, and this role is part of the senior, decision-making team. Estimated travel includes four trips of 2-3 days each per year.

The Role

Develop and implement talent and equity strategy

  • Perform a needs assessment of core talent functions across both offices, using organization’s burgeoning talent philosophy as an anchor
  • Develop a three-year strategic plan that integrates equity into all aspects of talent recruitment, development and support, and establishes our organizational priorities, goals, and plans related to talent and equity
  • Set clear priorities and measures of success for the next 12 months and then revise annually
  • Partner with current consultants supporting talent and equity
  • Align with senior team on vision and strategy
  • Evaluate effectiveness of talent and equity strategy and revise as needed

Oversee performance assessment

  • Conduct review of current performance assessment processes and their foundational components, including organizational core values and competencies
  • Review all annual performance assessments for consistency, and identify patterns in areas of staff development
  • Serve as a thought partner to managers and staff related to performance assessment 

Enhance professional development system

  • Develop and implement a professional development vision and strategy for the organization, with specific attention to developing managers and systematizing the practices needed to ensure an inclusive, positive experience for all staff
  • Align all staff to common understanding of professional development
  • Design systems for learning and cross-organizational collaboration
  • Create, facilitate and/or identify training sessions for staff development on topics that affect groups of staff such as core values, quality on-boarding and providing feedback

Manage compensation and benefits

  • Regularly review, assess and adjust, as necessary, compensation philosophy, processes and structures as appropriate for the organization’s needs and values
  • Thought partner with executive directors in setting salaries for new roles
  • Ensure all staff understand how to take full advantage of benefits
  • Review benefits on annual basis and make recommendations for renewal
  • Serve as confidential confidante to employee’s use of benefits

Direct day-to-day human resource operations

  • Solidify and oversee internal practices for onboarding, ensuring that all new staff have an effective first three months at Flamboyan and that managers are equipped to onboard their new hires
  • In partnership with the managing director of finance and operations, develop, run, assess and communicate annual staff satisfaction survey
  • Act as confidante for staff on personal matters and areas of concern
  • Administer our retirement benefit
  • Conduct exit interviews and aggregate information gained from them for organizational improvement and growth
  • Review and approve job descriptions and offer letters
  • Assure legal compliance with management of human resource affairs from soup to nuts

Education and experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of proven results including managing and coaching others
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and building a culture of equity
  • Deep value in people and individual’s ability to grow and learn
  • Culturally competent and self-aware
  • Exceptional people, relationship building, and communication skills, with a strong customer service mentality and high degree of integrity, accountability and emotional intelligence
  • Collaborative, approachable, accessible and engaging.  Open to feedback with evidence of handling sensitive situations with positive outcomes for the organization.
  • Excellent analytic, problem-solving, and coaching skills, with the ability to take a thoughtful and data-driven approach to addressing challenges
  • Ability to think strategically and build systems and processes for effective talent acquisition, development and management organization-wide
  • Experience leading in a time of significant organizational growth
  • Belief and model Flamboyan’s vision and core values
  • Fluent in Spanish desired
