Flamboyan Foundation recognizes that we cannot improve any public school system alone. This is particularly true in Puerto Rico, which is the 3rd largest school district in the United States, after New York City and Los Angeles Public Schools. Puerto Rico has 1,520 public schools and almost 500,000 students.

In Puerto Rico, Flamboyan Foundation is working to increase effective philanthropy and to raise the discourse about the potential transformative force of philanthropic giving. Puerto Rico’s unique environment has enabled us to explore ways in which individuals, nonprofits, foundations and government can engage and redefine philanthropy as a clear social investment towards solving some of the most difficult problems facing the community at large.

We define family engagement as the collaboration between families and schools that drives student achievement. A strong body of research shows that students do better in school and in life when their parents are engaged in their education. Teachers are only with children an average 14% of their time, so it is essential that families reinforce messages about learning outside of school.

We define education advocacy as informing and mobilizing families and community members to demand high quality schools and teachers so that students are able to thrive academically and become successful, productive citizens. The challenges, however, are significant: a lack of quality schools, existing achievement gaps along demographic lines and a deficit of information available to parents to make effective choices on how to support their children.
