DC Education Leader’s Legacy Endures in the M. Shanita Burney Award

Flamboyan Foundation is a proud, long-time sponsor of the Standing Ovation Awards Ceremony for DC Public Schools, and of the annual award for excellence in family engagement. This year is a deeply meaningful one as the award has been renamed the “M. Shanita Burney Family Engagement Award,” honoring a cherished advocate whose unwavering commitment enriched the fabric of the DC education community for more than 20 years.

The M. Shanita Burney Family Engagement Award embodies the dedication and partnership between families, educators, and students, reflecting Flamboyan’s belief in the transformative impact of meaningful family engagement in shaping students’ educational journey.

During a special ceremony at Turner Elementary School, the 2023 Standing Ovation winner, DC Public Schools Chancellor Dr. Lewis Ferebee addressed students and staff with a special message about Shanita.

“This is an important award because it’s named after Ms. Burney, who was also a close friend of mine and DC Public Schools,” Dr. Ferebee said. “She advocated for community and family engagement, and on behalf of the whole DCPS community, we’re thrilled to celebrate Turner Elementary School.”

Prior to her passing in March 2023, Shanita was DCPS’ Communications and Engagement Officer and a close partner to Flamboyan. She was a fierce advocate for students, families, and communities. DC’s leadership in family engagement and the progress the city has made are testaments to Shanita’s unwavering commitment. Renaming the annual family engagement award allows Flamboyan and the DCPS community to pay tribute to the legacy of an esteemed colleague and friend, and recognizes and celebrates those who embody the spirit of family engagement at a DCPS school.

Flamboyan CEO and Board Chair Kristin Ehrgood was honored to present the inaugural award at the 2023 Standing Ovation Ceremony with Constance Johnson, Shanita’s daughter and a senior at Roosevelt High School.

“My mom was passionate about helping students, families, and communities. I know she would be humbled by this award, and I am so proud of the legacy she leaves behind,” said Constance during the awards ceremony.
