Strengthening K-3 Reading

Reading proficiency by third grade is a cornerstone of future academic success.

Reading proficiency by third grade is a cornerstone of future academic success. In Puerto Rico, 40% of third grade public school students aren’t meeting native Spanish proficiency levels on standardized tests.

We believe, and strong evidence proves, that systems that continually struggle to teach young children to read are changed by putting the right information and resources in the hands of teachers – and supporting their growth and development along the way. Flamboyan works hand-in-hand with teachers, school directors, administrators, researchers and policymakers to identify the greatest challenges to successfully teaching reading in the K-3rd grades, and then partners with them to create solutions. Together, we give students the strong start they need to thrive.

K-3 Reading Programs

¡Equipados para leer!

¡Equipados para leer! provides multi-level classroom libraries and Read Aloud training for K-3 teachers. Each classroom library is built of high-quality books that meet international literacy criteria, are aligned to Puerto Rico Department of Education (PRDE) standards, and are culturally relevant. Additionally, teachers receive training in the research-based practice of Read Alouds through hands-on workshops and participation in a virtual community. The community allows participants to learn from, collaborate with, and contribute to the work of teachers in the program.

Herramientas para comprender

Herramientas para comprender is a comprehensive professional development program that builds teachers’ capacity to help young readers process text, understand its meaning, and integrate it with what they already know. This groundbreaking portfolio of reading comprehension tools includes curricula, assessments, and supplemental materials for early grade teachers to use in their classrooms as well as trainings to support implementation in schools across the island.
